ROY MAIN
The Main Thing is to keep the Main Thing the Main Thing!
Roy Main was the last of four great trombone teachers I had the privilege to study with. In the mid 70's, Alan Kaplan suggested I take some lessons with the man he called "the best teacher I ever had." I did for about three years. Roy certainly changed my life. In addition to a systemized routine, Roy had the great gift of identifying problems specific to the student in front of him and crafting specific exercises to address them. Roy studied with Louis Maggio, Jimmy Stamp and, I believe, with Jaroslav Cimera while in the Navy Band in Chicago.
I came to Roy as a working professional and he revolutionized my approach to the instrument, became my friend, mentor, and colleague. As a busy trombonist in Southern California, he had a keen insight into the practical demands of the LA music industry. He introduced me to many colleagues and friends that made my career possible – notably Hoyt Bohannon and Tommy Pederson. We played in the Composers Brass Quintet for more than a decade.
Roy taught generations of trombone players in Southern California, many of whom were and are very successful professionals, including but not limited to: Alan Kaplan, Alex Iles, Andy Martin, Charlie Morillas, Steve Holtman, Denis Jiron, Alex Henderson, David Beatty, Luis Bonilla, Mike Millar, Steve Trapani, Dan Levine . . . the list goes on . . .
Here is a tribute created by our mutual friend, Joe Meyer.
